Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Wine Information

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is an ancient grape which was well known in the days of the Romans. Today it is prodominantly grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of North Eastern Italy, which also lays claim to this grape varieties origins.

In the past this wine was used to produce basic table wines, but changing attitudes to the grape’s potential has resulted in a general improvement in quality, with winemakers concerntrating on the production of finer, more age worthy wines. Refosco wines tend to have particularly high acidity and are mostly dark in color with violet and grassy aromas. Flavors of dark peppery spices and plums often abound on the palate, and the wine often displays a slightly astringent, almond-skin like finish on the palate.

This is a late ripening grape. If harvested to early this grape can produce harsh green tannins, luckily the vine and fruit are resistant to disease and rot, and under the right growing conditions full ripeness can be achieved.

The origins of this grape are not completely known, but current evidence suggests it is indigenous to Italy. Roman writer Pliny the Elder praised a grape, which is thought to have been Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, in the first century for the fine wines produced using it. This grape was noted as a favorite of Augustus's wife Livia in 1390 by Italian writer Francesco di Manzano. The 1980's saw an increase in international interest in this grape, an increase in the quality of the wines produced led to an increase in imports.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia Wine region, Italy The major plantings of this grape can be found in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Northeast Italy. Here the grape is grown both on level terrain and hillsides. The area is bounded to the North by Austria, East by Slovenia, West by Veneto and the South by the Adriatic Sea. This grape has a preference for soils containing a good percentage of clay that are rich in calcium carbonate and rock fragments.
